Schools Cup and Championships 2022

08 Oct 2022

Saturday 8th October at the Aurora Aquatic & Leisure Complex, Bangor, Swim Ulster brought 165 Primary School teams to compete at the Primary Schools Cup and Championships. The event ran smoothly with the eager 521 individuals & team competitors travelling from all over Ulster.

The event was open to swimmers aged 9-12 years, with 9-10 years kicking of the AM session and 11-12 years swimming in the PM session.

The session began at 10am with over 150 swimmers competing in their chosen events. Across the 12 events, the fastest 8 swimmers in each progressed into the final to compete for a place on the podium. As always, the relays cause great excitement for the swimmers, schools and the crowd in the stands with girls 9-10 years & boys 9-10 years 4x50m Medley & 4x50m Freestyle Relay.

We saw Ballyholme Primary School take a clean sweep getting gold in all four relays, Portstewart Primary School stepping onto the podium collecting two silvers for the boys' and two bronze for the girls' relays. Not forgetting St Bride’s PS Belfast taking silver in the girls 4x50m Medley Relay and Penrhyn claiming silver in the girls 4x50m Freestyle Relay.

2pm kicked off the 11-12 years events. It was great to see numerous swimmers making their qualifying times for the Irish Minor Schools.

Relays had enthusiastic competition with Penrhyn taking gold & Ballyholme PS taking silver in both girls 4x50m Medley and Freestyle relay. Killicomaine Junior High School claimed bronze in 4x50m Medley and in the 4x50m Freestyle relay it was bronze for Our Lady’s Grammar School Newry. In the boy’s 11-12 years relays Creevy National School took gold & St Ronan’s College Lurgan claimed silver in both boys 4x50m Medley and Freestyle relay. It was bronze in the 4x50m medley relay for Methodist College Belfast and bronze for Campbell College in the 4x50m Freestyle relay.

A great turnout and afternoon for everyone involved and an honour for swimmers to represent their schools.
